FAQ

  • Why can't I find the call deadline?

The Programme consists of 2 calls for applications. Call 1 closed on 30th September 2019. Call 2 opens on 14 February 2020 and closes on 30 April 2020, 17:00 Austrian time. Check back on our website and Twitter for updates.

  • Can I submit recommendation letters in a language other than English?

As the applications will be evaluated by international peer-reviewers, letters need to be provided in English.

  • Can I edit my application after submitting?

No. As stated in the Guide for Applicants there is no possiblity to edit after submission. Only one proposal can be submitted per applicant per Call. In the event of multiple submissions, the University of Vienna will evaluate the first submission only. Please therefore ensure you prepare all of your documents and understand the criteria before submitting. There is no possibility to save an application and come back to it later.

  • I want to resubmit for Call 2. How shall I proceed?

Unsuccessful applicants from the first call may resubmit in the second call if applicants are still eligible according to the eligibility criteria. A letter should be included as an extra page at the end of the Research Proposal Application Form replying to suggestions and critical feedback received from the reviewers.

  • If I resubmit for Call 2, will you reuse the Letters of Recommendation that were sent directly to you from my referees?

Yes. If in Call 1 your referee sent a recommendation letter directly to us at rewire@univie.ac.at, then you do not need to request a new letter from the referee. Any recommendation letters that you submitted in Call 1 via the webform, please resubmit them along with your application for Call 2.

  • Do I need an updated Letter of Support from my mentor for a resubmission?

It would be best if you had an updated Letter of Support from your mentor to show renewed support for Call 2. But if this is not possible, please resubmit the Letter of Support from Call 1 and we will reconfirm with the mentor.

  • Resubmission: Is there a page limit for the letter replying to feedback from the reviewers?

There is no page limit for the letter but it should preferably be one page long. Please comment on the changes in a brief and precise manner.

  • Who can be a mentor?

Mentors should have a contract at the University of Vienna for the duration of the REWIRE fellowship (36 months). They must provide infrastructure (e.g. desk space and/or lab space) for the fellow at their Department. Mentors should have experience in recruiting and selecting postdocs, as well as supporting them in their successful careers.

For questions about mentor eligibility please see the Information for Mentors page or contact the REWIRE team: rewire@unive.ac.at.

  • Can the recommendation letters be sent after the call deadline?

No. The complete application, which includes the supporting documents, must be sent to us by the call deadline.

  • What salary will I be paid?

Postdoctoral researchers are paid in line with the Collective Bargaining Agreement for University Staff (§49, section 3, article b available in German here). The 2021 rate corresponds to 3.945,50 EUR (gross) and is payable 14 times per year.

  • I cannot find a mentor from my field in the list of Participating Departments. Does this mean I cannot apply?

The list of Participating Departments will be constantly updated. If you do not see any mentors in your research field, we encourage you to reach out to Professors at the University of Vienna who are within your field to find out if they would be willing to host you. You can do this via a Google search or via our u:find page: https://ufind.univie.ac.at/en/index.html

  • Is the Programme open to all nationalities?

    Yes.

  • I have never lived in Austria. Am I eligible to apply?

Yes. The mobility rule states that you cannot have resided or carried out your main activity (work or studies) in Austria for more than 12 months in the last 3 years at the time of the call deadline but it does not state that you must have lived in Austria.

  • How do I sign up as a mentor for the REWIRE Programme?

Please see the Information for Mentors or get in touch with Stephanie Fogel and Lisa Grabner at rewire@univie.ac.at for instructions on how to participate.

  • I have been in Austria since March 2019 and work for an institution outside of Austria. Am I eligible to apply for a REWIRE Fellowship?

Yes, you are eligible to apply for Call 1 and maybe Call 2 (check back periodically on our website for the exact call 2 deadline) because you have been in Austria less than 12 months in the past 3 years at the call deadline, which is 30th September 2019.

  • I live outside of Austria but have been employed part-time by an Austrian institution for more than 12 months in the last 3 years. Am I eligible to apply for a REWIRE Fellowship?

No, unfortunately not as the mobility rule states that you cannot have resided or carried out your main activity in Austria for more than 12 months in the last 3 years at the time of the call deadline. Working at an Austrian institution makes you ineligible.
